Nobody is neutral about cats. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, we all react strongly to them. Certainly, the feline independent streak endears cats to some, yet enrages others. Perhaps it’s visceral, dating back to the days when humans and cats competed or coexisted on the open savanna.

Cat Parents Beware!

I originally started this blog to commemorate my cat Saki, who died several years ago from feline leukemia. I adopted her as a kitten when I was living all alone in a cramped little studio apartment in Tokyo. I had a cat briefly when I was in college, but Saki was really the first cat I had as an adult. Before I got her, I made sure that there were no problems with bringing a cat from Japan to the U.S., as I knew that I’d be returning to the U.S. some time. If cats are coming from Japan, they don’t need to be quarantined if they’re entering continental U.S.

So when the time came I took Saki with me to Boulder, Colorado. We lived there happily for a while in a beautiful townhouse in an idyllic neighborhood. It was absolutely gorgeous, and Saki and I were very happy. Saki had all her shots and I thought she was safe, but she wasn’t. In hindsight I can see that I was quite ignorant about how to properly take care of cats. Despite spending hundreds of dollars regularly on Saki (and thousands when she was ill) I can see how ill-informed I was about cats and cat care. It’s too late for poor Saki, but if somehow I could improve the life of even one cat out there through this blog, then at least her death wouldn’t have been in vain.

And so my aim is to entertain and educate by sharing stories about various cats I have known. If you’re reading this, you love cats, or at least are interested in them.
